There are two concerns with Friday’s weather. First, it will be a hot day, possibly the hottest of the summer season. Then, thunderstorms will develop in the late afternoon and evening. Numerous severe storms are possible.
The sky will be mostly sunny for most of Friday morning and afternoon. Temperatures will top the lower 90s in the afternoon, and with dewpoints in the upper 70s, heat indices will range from 100 to 110 degrees. The expected conditions are hazardous to many people and pets, which is why the National Weather Service posted heat alerts for our area. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Eau Claire and locations generally south of highway 29 until 10 p.m. A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. for communities near and north of highway 29, including Chippewa Falls and Menomonie. Regardless of which alert is in effect for your area, take steps to beat the heat! Hydrate and take frequent breaks. Check on those who are more susceptible to heat, including the elderly, children, and pets.
Between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, thunderstorms will develop and move through our region. The Storm Prediction Center placed the northern half of Wisconsin and central Minnesota in a “moderate risk” for severe weather, which means “numerous severe storms are likely.” All threats are possible, including damaging, straight-line winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Plan ahead and keep an eye on the sky. Make sure you check the WQOW weather app for a look at the latest radar imagery and the newest weather information (click here).
Relief from the heat and humidity will come this weekend. A cold front will slowly drop through the region on Saturday. Near the front, scattered showers and thunderstorms will form. Some strong storms cannot be ruled out, but the severe weather threat will be significantly lower compared to Friday. It may still feel humid with dewpoints in the 60s. Sunday’s weather will be the type most people can appreciate. It will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s, and it will not be very humid.
The first half of next week will be pleasant with sunshine. Highs will be near 80, and lows will be in the 50s. Toward the end of the week, it will be warmer with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
