Outlook: More heat, humidity, and thunderstorms ahead

For Thursday night, July 18th-19th
Severe thunderstorms are possible late Thursday and Thursday night. Stay ahead of the storms with the WQOW weather app!

Warm and humid conditions will persist in our area through Saturday, then a cold front will push through the region. Sunday and part of next week will be cooler and less humid, the type of weather most people like in the summer season.

Between now and Saturday night, the atmosphere will be volatile due to the warmer temperatures and humidity. A weak outflow boundary from nearby thunderstorms or a mid-level trough could be enough to trigger thunderstorm development in our area. After the complex of rain and thunderstorms early Thursday morning, the sun will break out, which will push temperatures close to 90 degrees by the mid afternoon. A warm front will slowly lift through the region in the afternoon, and isolated showers and thunderstorms might develop.

On Thursday night, widespread rain and thunderstorms are possible in the Eau Claire area and west central Wisconsin. Rain will be likely if the front is in our vicinity; otherwise, the majority of it could pass north or south. If you open the WQOW weather app’s radar on Thursday evening, look to the west toward the Dakotas. If thunderstorms are developing around Aberdeen, SD and Alexandria, MN, it is likely storms will impact west central Wisconsin. If the storms are developing between Sioux Falls, SD and Omaha, NE, then our chance for rain is lower.

A cold front will push through the region this weekend. Following the front will be cooler and less humid air.

Friday will be a hot and humid day with highs in the lower 90s and afternoon heat indices around 100 degrees. A Heat Advisory is posted for part of the region. Make sure to hydrate and take breaks! Isolated showers and thunderstorms could develop in the afternoon, while showers and thunderstorms appear more likely in the region during part of Friday evening and Friday night. Some storms could be severe.

This weekend features mixed weather conditions. Saturday will be mostly cloudy and humid with scattered showers and thunderstorms, while Sunday will be mostly sunny and less humid. Highs will be in the lower 80s. Pleasant weather conditions will persist for most of next week.
