Eau Claire (WQOW) — It’s the start of a new era for the UW-Eau Claire football team, as Wesley Beschorner takes over as head coach ready to leave his mark on the program.
Their motto heading into 2019, it’s all about them and the future. It does help though having some talent back on both sides of the ball, as four starters return on offense and eight on defense. It’s been all about the progress from the spring and summer to the fall, getting better every day.
“I think all of our guys right now, we feel like we’re moving in the same direction. And if we can do that, great things can happen,” says Beschorner. “Seeing the progress is for sure, we’ve seen a lot of progress from spring and summer. These guys that were here this summer, worked really hard. And it was very much senior-led, junior-led, working on what we need to do. And we laid out a solid plan for them, and now we’ve got to execute it through fall camp and throughout the season.”
The one thing that Beschorner does inherit, is an experienced defense. As defensive coordinator Matt Ebner returns with a lot of talent and chemistry on that side of the ball. It will be led by preseason first-team all-american senior linebacker Sam Romanski, who knows the expectations are very high for 2019.
“It’s a really cool opportunity for us. Having a bunch of guys, having familiar faces looking around, and seeing guys that you’ve played with,” Romanski says. “You know everyone on the team can make plays, and you have faith in them. But I’ve seen most of the guys make plays, so it’s really exciting to see. And then the new guys that are rolling in, everyone is kind of competing for a starting job right now. It’s a lot of good competition, and it’s exciting to see.”
“It’s awesome, we kind of talk without really talking,” says senior defensive back Cam Swanson. “We’ve played together now for two to three years, so it’s just exciting to put it all together.”
The Blugolds open the season at Carson Park on September 7th, hosting Loras in a non-conference game at 1:10 p.m.
