Attorneys question competency of Rusk County murder suspect

Rusk County (WQOW) – A doctor has ruled a Rusk County murder suspect is competent to stand trial, but the attorneys involved in the case have expressed doubts.

Preston Kraft is charged in the May 2018 shooting death of Robert Pettit.

A doctor ruled Kraft is competent to stand trial, but both the defense and prosecution told a judge that competency could be an issue.

His defense team asked that a guardian ad litem be appointed to act in Kraft’s best interest and provide recommendations to the court with determining competency moving forward. The court will move to appoint a guardian ad litem at the next court date.

During the hearing, Kraft made several requests of the court, including a change of venue, change of attorneys, change of jail and bond modification. Those requests will be put on hold until a guardian ad litem is appointed.

Kraft is being charged with 1st degree intentional homicide. He faces life in prison.
