Wheeler (WQOW) – When it comes to maintaining a small town, it is usually a small group of people that step up.

That is the case in Wheeler, where one man is spending his retirement helping his wife and his hometown.

The Jefferson Award winner for August is David Goodell.

Whether it is a new playground, or trees cleared from a storm, if it is in Wheeler, David Goodell has probably had a hand in it.

Goodell has lived in Wheeler his whole life. His wife Robin has been the village clerk for about 35 years.

“I retired a few years back and then I just decided to help her,” Goodell said.

Robin helped raise $75,000 for a new playground in the town. Then, David helped her put it together.

“Want it to be nice so the kids and grandkids can play and people can be proud of the community,” Robin said.

It is a family affair for the Goodells in Wheeler. Robin is the village clerk. Their son Chris is the maintenance man and David serves as the right-hand man for both of them.

Record rain Monday, Wind Advisory in effect for Tuesday

A daily precipitation record was set in Eau Claire as more than an inch and a half of rain fell at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport. The low pressure system that caused this is only halfway through the Chippewa Valley, and tomorrow it will bring strong wind and lighter rain.
