Eau Claire (WQOW) – The City of Eau Claire is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to developing affordable housing.
On Tuesday, the Eau Claire City Council approved the purchase of land near Jeffers Road for an affordable housing development.
The city hopes 25 to 30 single-family homes can be built on the 20 acres of land purchased. The site will include public green space with woods and possible hiking trails.
The homes will be connected to Jeffers Road on Andy Lane which is currently mapped but undeveloped.
City Manager Dale Peters said deed restrictions will be enforced to ensure the homes remain affordable.
“Having affordable housing at all income levels and for employees within a city is a challenge for most cities,” Peters said. “This project on Andy Lane is an effort to provide affordable single-family housing in the area.”
Peters said they hope to work with nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and CVTC’s apprentice program throughout construction.
The site will be mapped this fall and lots will be available to developers by 2021.
