Eau Claire (WQOW) – An Eau Claire man said his father stopped a burglar with a hammer after the suspect allegedly stole from five homes on Eau Claire’s west side.

The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office told News 18 it is looking into the string of burglaries that took place a little after 3 a.m. Monday in the West View Acres neighborhood.

Residents say their cars and campers were broken into and the suspect reportedly stole several thousand dollars worth of electronics, weapons, cash and more.

One man recalls the night the burglaries happened.

“My dad managed to go back inside, grab a hammer and confronted the individual, threw the hammer at him, hit him dead on with the hammer, and he made a grunting noise and then he ran off,” the witness said.

“Never turned his lights on, ended up running into another neighbor’s yard where there was a culvert and more than likely has some damage to his car. I’m surprised he didn’t get stuck,” said Mallory, another witness.

Residents tell News 18 the neighborhood is normally quiet and nothing like this has ever happened there before.

They describe the man as being anywhere from an older teenager to in his early twenties. He is around 5 foot 9 inches tall and has short hair, they say.

If you have any information about the suspect you are asked to call the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office at 715-839-4709.
