Bernie Sanders finds favorite 2020 primary foil in Joe Biden

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has a new foil for the 2020 Democratic presidential primary: former Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden has been a declared candidate for fewer than three weeks and already Sanders has emerged as one of his most ardent critics. In recent days, Sanders has sought to expose the contrasts between him and Biden on some of the most animating issues for progressives, including free trade agreements, climate change and the Iraq War.

The strategy is reminiscent of Sanders’ approach to the 2016 Democratic primary, when he relentlessly slammed his rival Hillary Clinton as an establishment pawn. It’s a reminder that, even when Sanders lags in the polls, he is often most comfortable when he’s taking on establishment Democrats.
