Stanley (WQOW) – One Stanley-Boyd High School teacher is transforming the back of her classroom into a care closet for any student in need; but she cannot do it alone.

That is why News 18, along with Asher Lasting Exteriors and CCF Bank, awarded Samantha Kobs with this month’s Tools for Schools grant to help her stock the shelves.

The care closet is filled with clothing, winter jackets, shoes and personal hygiene items. This fall, she even had outfits for students to wear at the homecoming dance.

The message Kobs wants each of her students to know: It is always OK to ask for help.

“This is where I get really emotional. As teachers, we see a lot, and we hear a lot and we know that the kids are going through a lot, so if it’s as easy as me bringing in old sweaters that I don’t wear anymore or pants that I can’t button anymore or something like that. If it means that students get that and they don’t have to stress, or that their families or parents or guardians don’t have to stress about providing that for their children, that is one of the most powerful things as educators that we can do,” Kobs said.

The care closet also provides students with disabilities the opportunity work on life skills by doing laundry, folding clothes and organizing.

As the colder weather moves in, Kobs and Stanley-Boyd High School are having a clothing drive on October 21 where community members can get warmer clothing for their children. That runs from 12-3:30 p.m. in the gym at Stanley-Boyd Elementary School.
