JACKSON COUNTY (WQOW) - Authorities in Jackson County are asking for information on the whereabouts of a suspect at large who they say is armed and dangerous.

Thursday night, shortly after 11 p.m., a Jackson County deputy responded to a residence in the Town of Springfield to try and locate Gary Hughes for a felony probation warrant.

The deputy made contact with Hughes, but the suspect said he wasn't going back to jail, and fired shots at the deputy.

The deputy got away safely and called for backup, leading to a 15 hour standoff and negotiation.

Other people were in the residence at the time, and were evacuated by law enforcement.

At the end of the standoff, crews on scene made their way inside the residence, but Hughes was no longer there.

Anyone with information on Hughes' whereabouts is asked to contact the Jackson County Dispatch Center at 715-284-5357.

Again, Hughes is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who sees him should NOT approach him or attempt to apprehend him.

An investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released at a later time.
