The winter storm is on our doorstep and our advisories have been upgraded. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued for western Wisconsin from 12 pm Thursday through 6 pm Friday.
You will see some impacts from this system that will cause poor travel conditions.
Timing: The onset of snowfall will be near theMN/WI border between 9 and 10 am. Snow will arrive in Eau Claire between 11 am and 1 pm. The heaviest of snowfall will come between 2 pm and midnight. On and off snowfall will continue through almost all of your Friday.
Totals: Snowfall totals in the Chippewa Valley will range from 3'' to 6'' with an isolated 6'' to 8'' possible up towards Barron, St. Croix and Polk county. A quick 2'' to 4'' will fall towards south, central and eastern Wisconsin.
Winds: Winds will be from the west at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25+ mph Thursday. Friday stronger winds from the northeast at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35+ mph will cause blowing and drifting.
Visibility: During the Thursday evening commute, visibility will be less than 1/2 mile in the heaviest snow.
Travel impacts: Slippery roads will be an issue with heavier snowfall rates Thursday. Road crews will be working with above freezing temperatures so road treatment should work well. Overnight temps will fall back below freezing, but not far, so patchy slick spots are still possible. Friday - blowing and drifting snow will be the main concern with times of lowered visibility as light snow falls.
Forecast beyond this system: Flurries are still possible through Saturday morning before a break late Saturday night. A few lingering waves will try to wrap around our big system Sunday through Tuesday that may lead to a few flurries each day. Temperatures will fall back towards average, but the bitter cold holds off a bit late next week.
Chief Meteorologist Matt Schaefer will be tracking the system and commute conditions tonight at Live at Five as well as our 6PM and 10PM Reports.
