Eau Claire County (WQOW) - After seeing hundreds of COVID-19 tests being administered daily in Eau Claire County, recent numbers show a significant drop.

The number of COVID-19 tests in the past week has gone as low as just 17 in a day.

Eau Claire County Health Director Lieske Giese said there are some unknown barriers that have led to the drop in testing.

She said tests are still available at a number of locations across the county, including the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic while they figure out why the fluctuation in numbers is happening.

"Testing remains a strong priority, it's going to be one of the best ways that we have to identify where COVID-19 is and keep the impact of this as small as possible," Giese said. "Our goal continues to be increasing those numbers of tests, and we're working to figure out why exactly this is happening."

Giese added that one reason for the low numbers may be that people typically keep to themselves to enjoy the end of summer and take some time to relax at home before the start of the school year.
