Eau Claire County (WQOW) - The Eau Claire City-County Health Department director said the governor's mask mandate is a good thing.

Lieske Giese said a statewide mask mandate will be helpful in Eau Claire.

There are a number of exceptions to this order such as temporarily removing your mask so that a person who is deaf or hard of hearing can read your lips and facial expressions, for people with intellectual disabilities and for those with breathing issues.

During Thursday's virtual press conference, Giese said a local response is not the best way to enforce wearing masks, and that the best way to move forward is a statewide response.

"It makes it less confusing for all of us as citizens of this state and people that live and work and play in this state," Giese said. "It makes it easier for everybody to understand what the frame is, what is expected, how we can keep each other safe and we have a consistent way to do that across the state.  So I am in support of that."

Giese also said be gentle with one another. If you see someone not wearing a mask, assume it's for a good reason.
