(WQOW) - The Big Ten Conference is limiting competition schedules for fall sports teams due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The conference announced Thursday that member schools will no longer participate in non-conference events. Sports impacted include men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball.
That means the Wisconsin vs Notre Dame football game scheduled for October 3 at Lambeau Field will no longer be played.
In a letter to season ticket holders, donors and fans, Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said the school is looking to reschedule the event.
He also said home games at Camp Randall Stadium this fall will not be able to support capacity crowds.
In addition to the Notre Dame, the Badgers football team will also not play Southern Illinois or Appalachian State.
As of now, Wisconsin is set to open the season against Indiana on Friday, September 4 at Camp Randall Stadium.
The Big Ten said by limiting competition to only conference schools, it will have the greatest flexibility to adjust its own operations throughout the season and make quick decisions in real-time based on the most current evolving medical advice and the fluid nature of the pandemic.
Details for sports impacted will be released at a future date, and decisions on sports not included will continue to be evaluated, the conference said.
