Altoona (WQOW)- Construction on a highly-trafficked bridge in Altoona is taking a bit longer than expected.
Work is being done to the Spooner Ave. bridge over Otter Creek in Altoona, which has left the bridge closed since May 18.
The original length of the work contract was 45 business days, but county highway officials say the project was delayed due to rain that caused issues with painting under the bridge.
Officials say they've received numerous calls from locals voicing their frustrations with the closure.
"It's a little bit of an inconvenience," said Jon Johnson, Eau Claire County Highway Commissioner. "Especially for some of the homeowners I know live right nearby here, they know me personally and like to ask me about what's happening, and I just say be patient. It's construction season in Wisconsin, so hang in there."
Johnson says the bridge is expected to be completed and reopened for motor vehicles on July 27.
The adjacent trail for bicyclists and pedestrians is still open.
