Chippewa County (WQOW) - Neighbors of a house that exploded on Monday morning in Chippewa County say the blast was unlike anything they have ever heard before.

More: One killed, one injured in house explosion

Residents in a nearby neighborhood say the blast shook their homes and covered the sky in a plume of gray smoke.

One neighbor who lives across the street said she initially though it was just another 4th of July fireworks show.

"It was just the biggest boom like the whole house shook," said Christine Brown. "For a second I thought fireworks but it was so loud it shook everything and then we came out here thinking like maybe it was construction or something but it sounded like something fell from the sky."

One neighbor said the explosion was so powerful it broke off the screen on her front door.

To give you an idea of how powerful the explosion was, pieces of wood and debris that appear to be from the incident have landed on Jeffers Road, which is about 100 yards away.

Several viewers reached out to News 18 describing what they heard earlier in the morning. Some said they heard the explosion from several miles away.
