Eau Claire (WQOW) - Kids in Eau Claire will need to look for some new forms of entertainment this summer after the county parks and recreation department announced all summer programming is canceled due to COVID-19.
Dawn Comte, the recreation manager for Eau Claire Parks and Recreation, said the first session scheduled for June 15 was already canceled, with the rest of the summer still up in the air.
But, with a week left until the next session, Comte said logistically, there wasn't enough time to train staff.
"So to do programs safely, we would need a little more training than just a week," Comte said. "Just for cleaning protocols, staff wearing masks. We did have a plan written for that, but again, one week isn't enough to train and we have lost a lot of staff."
Comte added several staff members had already taken a new summer job, which also proved to be difficult when trying to plan for potential programming.
Pop-up programs may be possible in late July. While it's still a strong maybe, Comte said any program updates will be on the Parks and Rec social media pages.
