Eau Claire (WQOW) - Huntsinger Farms now holds the title for the largest solar power system on a farm in northern Wisconsin.
The farm, which is the world's largest grower and processor of horseradish, flipped the switch on their 288-panel solar power project Wednesday.
Silver Spring Foods, a subsidiary of Huntsinger, started planning the project last September. A grant from Focus on Energy helped bring the idea to life.
The solar panels will provide year-round power while bring down energy costs, improving efficiency and moving the farm towards higher sustainability.
"Being able to harness the power of the sun to create electricity in order to run our coolers, we'll be able to generate 18 percent of our overall energy usage through the year," says Eric Rygg, Silver Spring Foods president. "We're hopefully going to be able to inspire others to take a big or small steps towards sustainability."
Tours of the new solar field will be offered at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2021.
