City of Eau Claire calls social media post claiming civil unrest “fictitious”

Fake note

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The city of Eau Claire and Eau Claire police are responding to a social media post that was making the rounds on Thursday night claiming something similar to what is happening in Minneapolis could happen here.

The post reads, "Dear business owner, we have credible information that there is an elevated threat of civil unrest that may occur in the Barstow and Water Street areas of Eau Claire. The city council has put the police force on alert and activated the local emergency response teams. The governor has put the National Guard on alert status as well. Please make extra efforts to secure your business as much as possible to prevent loss of personnel land property [sic] effective immediately."

The post claims to be from the Eau Claire Emergency Action Committee. Eau Claire officials say no such group exists.

"Unfortunately there are people who prey on others during times of uncertainty and this appears to be an example of that," Eau Claire officials said in a statement.

They also want to remind you any public communication will come directly from the city of Eau Claire, Eau Claire County Emergency Management or law enforcement.
