Eau Claire (WQOW) - It may be Teacher Appreciation Week, but Eau Claire teachers are the ones giving back.

On Monday, Eau Claire teachers showed how much they appreciate their students by providing their families with free meals.

In mid-April, the Eau Claire Association of Educators started a campaign with Feed My People Food Bank to raise $2,500, which would pay for 10,000 meals for people in the community.

Within 24 hours they surpassed that goal and kept raising it. On Monday the campaign garnered more than $12,000, which equates to more than 40,000 meals.

South Middle School teacher and ECAE member Brian Wiltgen said the group wants students and their families to not only be well-educated, but also well-fed.

"It's so difficult not being able to see our children face to face," said Wiltgen. "It's even more difficult not knowing what's happening at home with food and things like that. So we just to make another way that we could help out our students under these unbelievable circumstances."

Wiltgen said there will be an even bigger need for food in the summer.

If you'd like to support families with free meals, you can either donate to the campaign online or send a cash or check directly to Feed My People.
