Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - Luke Thompson is a big sports fan. So much so, that the 5th grader at Stillson Elementary School in Chippewa Falls has continued to bring sports news to his classmates during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I use Loom, and bring videos to the school to share my screen and announce things that I think would be interesting," says Thompson. "Some local Chi-Hi things, and some national things."
Luke is the sportscaster at Stillson's Channel 7 News, a student-run weekly newscast put on by the fifth graders. He wasn't going to let the "Safer at Home" order stop his sportscasts.
"When we had to go virtual, he emailed me and was like 'what can I do'", says Beth Duffy, Channel 7's news director. "I gave him some options and he decided to do the video option. He writes it every week, sends it to me, and then we push it out to the students through our P.E. google classroom."
Delivering sports news may be different from home, but Luke's got the system down.
"I get some websites in order, and all you do is click and start recording," says Thompson. "Then they hear my voice and I read off a script. I go to different websites to show them what I'm talking about."
"It's pretty fun to watch him take this and run with it," says Mike Thompson, Luke's dad, "I help him any way I can, just following his lead and maybe giving him some stories that are relevant right now. Getting our little bit of fulfillment of sports while we can."
It seems Luke may have even found his future calling.
"I just really like doing this," says Thompson. "And wanted to keep doing it."
