Menomonie (WQOW) - A local university has announced its first round of furloughs in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
UW-Stout Chancellor Katherine Frank said 69 people have received furlough notices. In a letter to staff, she said these are employees with a limited workload due to current needs and those who cannot carry out duties remotely.
"I know this is an extremely difficult time for our university community, and especially for those who received furlough notices today. I also realize there is very little I can say that will reduce stress or anxiety as this process continues," Frank said.
Frank's letter goes on to say a second set of furloughs are coming on May 11. She said at that point they "anticipate announcing a preliminary plan for institution-wide intermittent furloughs and perhaps other workforce actions, such as reduction in FTE, as suggested in campus feedback."
According to the chancellor, there have been no discussions about layoffs at this point.
