Wisconsin (WQOW) - Sen. Tom Tiffany has defeated challenger Jason Church to represent the Republican party in the race for the 7th Congressional District.

The primary was to see which candidate would represent Republicans in the race to replace now-retired Representative Sean Duffy. Duffy said he was stepping away back in the fall of 2019 to spend more time with family.

Tiffany is a state senator from Minocqua. Church is a retired Army captain who calls Hudson home.

Tiffany told News 18 on Monday he is committed to helping President Donald Trump with border control.

"As a state senator, I helped get rid of a $3 billion deficit in Wisconsin. We need to do the same at the federal level, and we need to secure the border," Tiffany said. "We need to secure the border so we know who's coming in and out of our country as well as to control the rise of methamphetamine that comes from Mexico as well as human trafficking."

Tiffany will now face off against Democrat Tricia Zunker in the special election on May 12.
