Bob Bradovich has been a sports staple in Eau Claire since 1996. But last year, the former News 18 Sports Director decided to step away from the camera. Many thought his days calling games were over, but the sports fanatic couldn't stay away.
"There's like an adrenaline that happens when you're calling games," says Bradovich. "Those moments that determine who's going to win, who's going to lose, the goal that puts somebody ahead late in the period, or the save that really helps keep a team on top. It's those sorts of things, and in hockey you get quite a few of those."
After 18 years of doing play-by-play for the WIAA state hockey tournament, the longtime TV sportscaster hung up the mic last season. But during his year away from the ice, Bradovich found that he wanted back in.
"I definitely missed being at games," Bradovich says. "So when there was an opportunity to still be a part of that in some way, it was one thing I really wanted to pursue. I'm really happy it worked out the way it did."
Bradovich is back, but calling local high school hockey games now on the radio in Eau Claire, but doing it with the same enthusiasm he's had his entire career.
"Hopefully I'm able to get that excitement that's in the rink, and get that on the radio," Bradovich says. "Allow listeners to get a sense of what's going on."
His comeback though gets even better. As this year, Bradovich will be returning for his 19th year calling the WIAA state hockey tournament, continuing to do what he loves.
"It's been a lot of fun, and I've done it for a long time," says Bradovich. "I guess as long as they'll keep having me, I think I'll keep doing it. "
