Eau Claire (WQOW) - The operator of an Eau Claire daycare faces charges, accused of breaking the leg of a three-year-old girl.

Sherri Schulner, the owner of Sherri's Stay-N-Play Daycare (an in-home daycare) was charged last week with a felony count of physical abuse of a child.

According to the criminal complaint, the incident happened in October of 2018.

The child's parents received a message from Schulner saying their daughter was acting strangely.

They took her to urgent care where they discovered her femur was fractured in multiple places.

Schulner says she dropped the child about six inches into a play-pen but could not explain how the fractures happened.

A doctor told police it takes a lot of force to break a femur and it's unlikely it happened how Schulner described.

In an interview with police, the three-year-old said, "Sherri broke my leg" but couldn't provide any more details.

Schulner's initial appearance is scheduled for early March.

Based on the charges, if convicted, she faces up to 3.5 years behind bars.
