1 dead, 2 injured in Barron County crash

Barron County (WQOW) - A deadly crash has left one man dead and two others injured after their vehicle rear-ended a semi truck.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, just before 1 p.m. on Monday, a Ford Escape, headed westbound on CTH I, struck the rearend of a semi near Chetek. That semi, which was headed eastbound, was turning onto 22 3/4 street.

Authorities report the passenger in the front right seat of the Escape, now identified as Robert J. Warnecke, 46, of Dallas, WI, died from his injuries. The driver of that crash, Joseph Edward Wakefield, 53, of Dallas, WI, was treated for minor injuries. Another passenger in the Escape was also treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash. According to the WI State Patrol, a blood draw was obtained from the driver of the Escape to rule out impairment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
