Mondovi (WQOW) - Just two months ago, a dog found severely malnourished in Dunn County was recovering at the humane society. Now, he is living in his forever home.

Following the death of their previous rescue dog a couple years ago, Henry Chan and his family decided it was time to add another dog to their family. He said he saw Gabriel's story and reached out to the Dunn County Human Society.

In mid-December, Gabriel moved into his foster home with Henry's family.

"In about an hour, he settled in and it was like he had lived there four [or] five years," Chan said. "I've had a couple dogs that I've adopted and I've never seen one like him that just settled in so fast, and he just knew it was his home."

Gabe did so well in his foster home that they decided to make him a permanent member of the family. The once severely malnourished Gabe is now a healthy 63 pounds, and has made a full recovery.

"He could barely walk, [had] organ failure, and now he's the ideal dog," Chan said.

Chan said there is no way of knowing if Gabe will experience complications later in life because of what he went through, but said it doesn't look like he'll have any problems. Gabe now spends his days playing with his favorite toys, tennis balls.

"This is what shelters do," Chan said. "Look at him. He was so bad when they brought him in, and look at him today. He's healthy. He's a great dog. Don't be afraid to support your shelter or think about adoption."

He said he will continue to use Gabe as a spokes-dog for adoption and hopes to host fundraisers for local shelters in the future. Chan said you can continue to follow Gabe and get updates on upcoming fundraisers on the 'Gabriel's Journey' Facebook page.
