Eau Claire County (WQOW)- The field is set for the upcoming Eau Claire City Council and Eau Claire County Board races.

The deadline to file nomination papers was 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The last city council election saw a record number of candidates throw their hats in the ring.

The city and county election clerks said that while all the races have candidates, there is certainly no need for a primary election like last year.

Starting with the city council, current president Terry Weld looks like he'll keep his spot, with no one running to unseat him.

However, we do know there will be a new member on the council, after Laura Benjamin stepped down late last year.

Two candidates are running for the at-large seat, Dale Poynter and Mai Xiong.

In 2019, so many people ran for city council that the field had to be cut down in a primary election.

City Elections Clerk Carrie Riepl said that although there are fewer candidates this year, there's still strong interest in local politics.

"With our elections last year we definitely saw that with the at-large election there were five seats up and we had quite a bit of interest," Riepl said. "We've had people call this year and look at the paperwork so far though we've got two for one and one for the other."

On the county board side where there is one vacant seat, there are 13 new candidates running to have a say in Eau Claire County affairs, which is up from previous years.

"This particular year yes, there is probably four to five more than in other years we've seen," said Janet Loomis, the Eau Claire County clerk. "It is a two-year term so our county board has to run every two years."

There will be a number of other races on the ballot including the Eau Claire school board, state supreme court race and, of course, the presidential primary.
