Eau Claire (WQOW)- Before you buy supplies to lure in a buck you may want to make sure it’s legal to bait in your area.
DNR Recreation Warden Jake Holsclaw said it’s illegal to use corn, apples or any type of mineral lick to attract deer in a county that prohibits it.
This year it’s illegal to bait in Eau Claire, Chippewa, Dunn, Barron, Washburn, Burnett, Polk, Buffalo, Pepin and Trempealeau counties in our area.
You can bait in St. Croix, Pierce, Jackson, Clark, Taylor, Rusk, Sawyer, Douglas, Bayfield and Price counties.
If you’re caught baiting, Holsclaw said you could face a citation that could be hundreds of dollars.
Holsclaw said there are baiting restrictions to help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease.
“Based on some of the research that’s been done, it’s that saliva or nose to nose contact that can possibly spread the disease and that’s why those bans have been put into place,” Holsclaw said.
Holsclaw said there are CWD kiosks all over the Chippewa Valley. For a list of kiosks click here.
