Chippewa Falls (WQOW) — You can now charge your device using the power of the sun, all while enjoying the views of the river in Chippewa Falls.
Xcel Energy recently donated three solar benches to the city of Chippewa Falls. The benches allow people to charge their devices while sitting at Riverfront Park. The benches cost about $2,000 apiece.
Chris Ouelette with Xcel Energy said people can charge up to four devices at one bench, all while using solar energy.
“There’s no infrastructure that’s needed to install them because they’re solar powered. The sun charges these benches for residents to then charge their devices,” said Ouelette.
People will still need to provide their own charging cords to take advantage of the benches.
Ouelette said a bench was also donated to Altoona, which the city plans to install at River Prairie Park in the spring of 2020.
Xcel Energy also donated four solar charging poles to the city of Eau Claire, but Ouelette said one of them was vandalized. They’re still trying to determine where the solar charging poles should be placed.
