Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office warns about officer impersonation scam

Eau Claire (WQOW) — The Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office said someone is impersonating an officer in the latest scam going around the Chippewa Valley.

In a release, the sheriff’s office said it had received three calls Friday afternoon from citizens who had been contacted by a person falsely representing themselves as a member of the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the person identified himself as ‘Officer Malone’ and even provided a badge number. He then told people they had outstanding warrants and directed them to go to Walmart to post bond on the warrants.

The sheriff’s office said they do not have an employee named Malone and would never direct anyone to post bond on a warrant at a retail store.
