Eau Claire (WQOW) – The Eau Claire City Council is taking steps to bring more awareness of the transgender community.
On Tuesday night, the council declared November 14-20 as Transgender Awareness Week.
County board member Zoe Roberts, a transgender woman and activist, was at the podium while the proclamation was read.
The city council also said November 20 will be designated as Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Roberts said the declaration is an accomplishment for both her and the community.
“It is a vigil to honor the deaths of those people who were murdered during the year that are transgender,” Roberts said. “Most of those people that are murdered are transgender women of color and this year so far the majority of them have been from 17 to 30.”
Roberts said on November 20, there will also be a Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil at the State Theatre and Community Center in Eau Claire.
