Eau Claire hairstylists offer makeup, hair lessons to transgender community

Eau Claire (WQOW) –  Two hairstylists teamed up with the Chippewa Valley LGBT Community Center to offer free hair and makeup lessons to transgender and non-binary individuals on Sunday.

Travis Gorell, an instructor at the Professional Hair Design Academy, and Joey Emerson, a former student of the academy, said they want to give people identifying as transgender or non-binary, a safe space to learn how to do their own hair and makeup.

Both stylists offer one-on-one sessions to people wanting to learn more, but said events like this show individuals that there is a support system for them within the LGBT community.

“The goal is to let people know that they’re not alone in this and that there are other people out there that are going through the same things and have the same questions and want to know,” Gorell said. “So I think it’s important for people to know that we’re a community and we’re there for each other.”

The LGBT Center and academy said they hope to have more hair and makeup workshops in the future.

Gorell and Emerson are also taking appointments for individual learning sessions, and can be contacted on their Facebook pages.
