Permanent rainbow crosswalk painted in Central Wisconsin

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — A rainbow road was painted by UW-Stevens Point students, staff and Mayor Mike Wiza on Monday.

A road sign beside the crosswalk explains the meaning behind the paint.

“The colors represent the Philedelphia pride flag, to highliht and honor the AIDs epidemic with the Black stripe, and the contributions — and often erasure of folks of color — with the brown stripe. In addittion, the rainbow flag was originally created by Gilbert Baker, with each color representing:

Red – Life

Orange – Healing

Yellow – Sunlight

Green – Nature

Blue – Serenity

Purple – Spirit

UWSP and the City of Stevens Point are commited to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. The pride crosswalk was made possible by the City of Stevens Point, Mayor Mike Wiza, and the 2018-19 UWSP Student Government Association.”
