Eau Claire (WQOW) – UW- Eau Claire put up another impressive win on Saturday over UW-River Falls, but in the process lost their starting quarterback.
Sophomore Jonathan Malueg went down minutes into the second quarter, tackled from behind as he left the pocket. His leg was injured on the play, and he did not return.
Sophomore Josiah Johnson, who competed with Malueg for the starting role, was called on to finish the job and got the win in the 27-14 victory. For the moment, it looks like Johnson will be the man leading the offense.
“He played more than a half at St. Norbert. At St. Thomas he played, was the winning quarterback here so I have a ton of confidence in him,” says Blugolds head coach Wesley Beschorner. “I think he’s got some abilities that Jon doesn’t have and vice versa. He’s making good reads, where to run the football, and that’s kind of what the game called for. I thought he did a great job handling it.”
“I felt really bad for him, but after he went down I went over and told him, hey I got your back, I’m going to finish this,” says Johnson. “Of course there’s always some jitters, but once you get in there and play the jitters are gone. This is my time, I’ve just got to finish what Jon started.”
The Blugolds will be in Oshkosh on Saturday.
