Child on bike dies after being hit by garbage truck in Sheboygan

A garbage truck driver hit and killed a 9-year-old boy on a bike.

The collision happened about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at North 14th Street and Center Avenue in Sheboygan.

Police said the boy was riding his bike to school on the sidewalk, when he attempted to cross a side street just as that city of Sheboygan garbage truck was making a right turn into his path.

Sheboygan police Chief Chris Domogalski said the boy was heading downhill toward that cross street.

The boy was not a wearing a helmet. Police said he died at the scene.

“I looked out my bedroom window, and I had seen an officer running to the front of my house to where there’s a distraught garbage man with his head in his hands,” said Chad Miller, who lives near the scene of the crash.

The driver is a 35-year-old man who has been with the city for two years. Riding on the back of the truck was a 55-year-old veteran city employee with 20 years on the job.

So far, there has been no word on whether the driver will face any charges.

The child’s name has not been released, but police said the family has been notified.

The boy attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Sheboygan. The school principal, Wendy Kretschmar, sent a statement, saying in part, “We are heartbroken by this loss to our school family. He was a kind, smart and fun-loving boy who loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Because the accident involved a city of Sheboygan vehicle and employee, the Wisconsin State Patrol has taken over the investigation.
