Buffaloes, Cardinals set to battle for first in the Dunn-St. Croix

Mondovi, Spring Valley (WQOW) — The race for a Dunn-St. Croix title this season has been between two teams, Mondovi and Spring Valley. The two will square off Friday night in Mondovi, for sole possession of first in the conference standings.

The Buffaloes’ defense has been nothing short of dominant in 2019, as their one of two teams in all of Wisconsin that hasn’t allowed a single point. But for the sixth ranked team in division five, they know they’ll face their toughest test of the season against the Cardinals’ run game.

“They have a really talented quarterback, that has ran that system for a long time. He makes really good decisions with the ball, and he’s a play-maker,” says head coach Craig Loscheider. “They have a fullback who’s also very talented, and very tough to stuff for three yards. And they’re comfortable with getting three yards a pop down the field.”

“They’ve got a really good run game, and we’re just really excited in stopping their run,” senior quarterback/linebacker Carter Johnson says. “We’ve proven that we can do it all year, so it should be a good game.”

On the other side of the field, Spring Valley’s goal is to stick to the script offensively still. The Cardinals have already ran for 2,189 yards and 33 touchdowns this season. To them, it’s no secret that the winner of this game will control the line of scrimmage up front.

“We just have to use our rules that we implemented at the beginning of the year, and use them to perfection,” says senior quarterback/defensive back Aaron Borgerding. “And if we perfect those rules and execute them, we should be able to find some lanes.”

“For us, our goal is going to be always the same. It’s going to be to try and run the football, and stay on schedule with the things that we do,” head coach Ryan Kapping says. “I think either team is going to have to run the football to win the game, and run the football effectively. That’s always our goal and intention, and we’re going to see how we can do getting after them Friday night that way.”

Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Mondovi.
