Flu shot season: Health officials recommend getting shot sooner than later

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Fall will be here before we know it. Along with the changing leaves and cooler air, the season also brings the dreaded flu.

That is why Eau Claire health officials say it is important to get vaccinated early, before the holidays arrive and more germs can be passed through shopping malls, family gatherings and more.

“Every year we have Eau Claire County residents that are hospitalized, residents of all ages, that are hospitalized with influenza,” said Allison Gosbin, a public health nurse.

Last year, flu cases sent more than 20 people to the hospital in Eau Claire County. That is a stark decrease from the 143 hospitalized the previous year.

Gosbin said it is too early to tell how bad the flu season will be this year, but prevention can help. She recommends getting the flu story by late October as it takes two weeks for the vaccine to kick in.
