Family ‘sparkles’ lawns for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

Eau Claire (WQOW) –  September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and one family that is all too familiar with the disease is spreading awareness with sparkles.

The Odegard family started Mighty Maddy’s Mission after the loss of their daughter to cancer two years ago.

Now they “sparkle” lawns with butterflies for families going through the same journey, as well as throw birthday and end of treatment parties for kids who have to spend those milestones in the hospital.

Maddy’s dad Joshua Odegard said that it is all about making these families’ days a little brighter when going through a tough time.

“As part of the awareness we want to just help create as many smiles in the community as well,” Odegard said. “So it’s just wonderful seeing them all out there. And our kids get involved and just have a lot of fun with it.”

Mighty Maddy’s Mission also puts together “diagnosis packages” for families who just received the news that their child has cancer.

They include information on resources as well as gifts, to let the families know they’re not alone in the fight.
