Carson Park causeway wins regional competition

Eau Claire (WQOW) – A bridge in Eau Claire is being recognized for its innovative use of space and how nice it is to look at.

The rebuilt Carson Park causeway is one of eight transportation projects in six states to win the Mid-America Association of State Highway and Transportation regional competition.

The causeway was honored in the Quality of Life and Community Development category.

The project team was credited for the wider structure that includes clearance for kayakers, designated bike lanes, improved lighting and various spots to fish from, including ADA fishing.

“This wasn’t just a transportation facility, it increased safety and it helped improve the quality of life for the community,” said David Solberg, city engineer. “It’s one of the things that we try to do with all our projects when we’re around the waters, to try and get more people out, be more active, take advantage of our resources in a safe manner.”

Each winner has a chance to compete for the number one spot, but in order to be placed in the running, the project first has to be selected for the top 12 project list.

That list, which selects the three best projects from each of the four regional competitions, will be announced Friday.
