Fatal aircraft crash near Viroqua under investigation

VIROQUA, Wis. (WXOW) – Federal and local authorities are investigating the crash of an aircraft Monday night near Viroqua.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said they were called around 6:34 p.m. for the crash into a field off of Miller Road in the Town of Jefferson. The location is northwest of the Viroqua Municipal Airport.

Witnesses said that they saw the aircraft, which was identified by the sheriff’s office as a Sportcopter Vortex experimental rotorcraft.

The witnesses said they heard the engine on the aircraft stop. They then saw the aircraft go down.

The sheriff’s office said the rotor was detached from the body of the aircraft upon impact. The body of the aircraft went for about another 40 feet before ending up in a corn field.

The crash did cause a small fire which was put out by the Viroqua Fire Department.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, the Federal Aviation Administration, and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash and its cause.

The name of the person killed in the crash has not been released pending notification of relatives.
