Menomonie woman sentenced for causing mental harm to a child

Dunn County (WQOW) – A Menomonie woman convicted for causing mental harm to a child was sentenced in Dunn County Court on Monday.

Kristine Buttke and Michael Johnson were charged in the summer of 2016.

According to prosecutors, a then-10-year-old child in their care had to sleep on the basement floor without a mattress or sheets and had to use that floor as a toilet.

In June, a jury found Buttke not guilty of child abuse, but did convict her of causing mental harm – party to a crime. A count of child neglect was dismissed by prosecutors.

Judge Rod Smeltzer sentenced Buttke to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.

In May of last year, Johnson was also found guilty of causing mental harm to a child. He received the same sentence as Buttke. Johnson filed an appeal in the case but it was dismissed earlier this month.
