HS Football Preview: Mack have more depth & experience entering 2019

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) — Entering his second season as head coach for McDonell Central, Jason Cox is creating a more strict and motivating environment. The Macks are looking to improve off their inaugural season in 8-man, and officially get their first win.

They do return five starters on both sides of the ball, but more importantly they have a lot more depth than 2018. As 25 players have gone out for the upcoming season, including a big freshmen class entering the program. For Cox though, it’s about the players learning from last year’s mistakes and growing on and off the field for 2019.

“The kids really took to heart the things that we were talking about last year,” Cox says. “Some things that they didn’t do well, they realize they need to do those things in order to improve or they’re going to lose a bunch of games again. So they’ve worked a lot harder I think, in order to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

The Macks are expecting some of the incoming freshmen to fill in key spots on both sides of the ball. And with a lot more talent overall on this roster, the arrow for the program is pointing in the right direction. The final step now is finishing on the field, which they believe they can do this season.

“Hoping to get at least a few more wins this year,” says junior offensive/defensive lineman Noah Christopherson. “We’ve got a lot better players, a lot more players, and everyone’s trying a lot harder than we’re used to.”

“I think we’re going to win a lot of games this year,” senior wide receiver and defensive back Adam Thalacker says. “The effort that everyone gives, and everybody’s been working so hard and giving it their all, all practice.”

McDonell Central opens the season on August 23rd, traveling to Port Edwards.
