Petanque club takes over Wilson Park

Eau Claire (WQOW) –  A sports club has taken over Wilson Park in Eau Claire with a unique yard game from France.

It’s called petanque, and the rules are simple: teams throw metal balls onto a gravel court and whichever team has the closest shots to a target wins.

Anne-Marie Bittner, originally from France, started the club in memory of her son Joël, who was a big fan of the game and played often with their family.

Now, Anne-Marie hosts the club every Sunday and teaches the community how to play – all for free.

For her, the club is a way of not only sharing the memory of her son, but also some French culture.

“This is big stuff in France,” Anne-Marie said. “In fact, the biggest game is in Marseilles where we come from,” “It’s free, it’s easy, it’s fun and it’s healthy, so you can’t go wrong.”

The club meets in Wilson park every Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m..

The event also has prizes each week for the teams that place highest.
