HS Football Preview: Elk Mound’s strong numbers will help fill holes

Elk Mound (WQOW) — The Mounders must replace a talented senior class that helped them earn a share of the Dunn-St. Croix conference title last season. But strong numbers throughout the entire program, should help Elk Mound fill holes on both sides of the ball.

David Lew enters his seventh season as head coach for the program, and only three starters return on offense and four on defense. But Lew says around 60 players have gone out for football in 2019, including about 30 juniors and seniors combined. They’ll be a lot of new faces this season, but players are excited and ready for the challenge.

“We’ve got a lot of kids who really want to step up, and really want to play,” Lew says. “And being in the system now for the last four to five years, we’ve got a lot of hope that these young men are just going to step up. And we’ll see what happens from there.”

An even bigger challenge is replacing the offensive and defensive conference players of the year. As both Brady Redwine (first-team all-conference running back) and Brett Lew (first-team all-conference linebacker) have graduated, but the Mounders are excited with the group that they have especially on defense.

“Kids are having a lot of fun right now, and they’re really excited,” says Lew. “We’re staying in the same system we’ve had. There’s a lot of excitement, a lot of fun, and kids just want to come up and hit somebody. So it’s going to be a neat thing to see.”

Elk Mound opens the season August 23rd on the road, with a non-conference game against Cochrane-Fountain City.
