Barron County (WQOW) – It has been 24 hours since severe storms moved through the Chippewa Valley and areas to the north. Still, thousands of people are without electricity.

According to Xcel Energy’s outage map, 812 people in Chetek alone are still in the dark while the same is true for 176 people up the road in Cameron.

Roughly 1,100 people are also without electricity in and around Turtle Lake.

According to Xcel Energy, more than 500 employees are out on Saturday working tirelessly to get issues resolved. They say statewide as many as 25,000 people lost power at one time or another. As of 5 p.m., 9,000 of those people were still in the dark.

“We greatly appreciate our customers’ patience as employees from all over the region travel to Wisconsin to help restore electric service,” said BJ Rauckman, senior director, distribution operations, Xcel Energy-Wisconsin. “The storm featured winds of more than 80 miles per hour, which damaged trees and power lines throughout the state. We’re working as quickly and safely as possible to remove debris and repair the damage.”

Xcel staff add because of the severity of the storm there are some areas they will not be able to work on until Sunday.
