13th annual U.S. National Kubb Championship begins Friday

Eau Claire (WQOW) — Hundreds of Kubb enthusiasts are headed to Eau Claire this weekend for the 13th Annual U.S. National Kubb Championship.

City officials said this yard game tournament will bring in about $156,000, through hotels, restaurants, shops and more.

The tournament kicks off Friday, but on Thursday some were already practicing as event officials began preparations. Approximately 500 Kubb players will make up 128 teams, with competitors coming from all across the country, and even Sweden, to face-off for the Kubb championship.

Eric Anderson, director of the U.S. National Kubb Championship, told News 18 this is the largest Kubb event in North America and has nearly tripled in size since starting 2007.

“There’s a lot of camaraderie and sportsmanship within the game,” Anderson said. “There’s a saying with Kubb that Kubb unites people and it brings people together. So it’s a great collection of people getting together and play, and it’s just a lot of fun.”

The tournament is free to spectators. Anderson added if you’ve never seen a game of Kubb, this tournament is a great way to immerse yourself.
