How to avoid triggers during 4th of July fireworks if you suffer from PTSD

Eau Claire (WQOW) – The Fourth of July is just days away and it is a time to celebrate our freedom and the ones who fought to make it happen.

However, fireworks cold be problematic for our veterans.

Health officials said there are a number of triggers for those with post traumatic stress disorder – like gun shots, dogs barking and fireworks.

Hayley Willetts, a behavioral health nurse at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, said if the Fourth of July is hard on you there are some things you can do to make the situation better.

“Wearing some headphones that can cancel the noise, getting yourself out of that environment, surrounding yourself with your loved ones or talking to your neighbor or who is doing the show and letting them know that this may be a concern for you,” Willetts said.

Willetts added if you do have PTSD, there are some treatment options and counseling services that can help you.
