How you can stay safe, cool in the upcoming heat wave

Eau Claire (WQOW) – After Thursday’s storms, we’ll have the Chippewa Valley’s hottest weekend of the year so far.

The Eau Claire Health Department is reminding you to drink plenty of water and limit time outside.

They advise against too much alcohol or caffeine, and instead recommend water or electrolyte drinks like Powerade to lower the risk of heat stroke.

“If you go outside  kind of watch how quick you’re getting hot, limit how long you’re out there. We’re not gonna say don’t go out at all but just understand that there is an extra risk with being outdoors this weekend,” said Eau Claire Emergency Management Coordinator Tyler Esh.

Esh said it’s also important to check on loved ones, the elderly or neighbors who might not have air conditioning.

The Health Department advises you head to public spaces like libraries or malls to keep cool.
