Sturgeon rescued from small pool near Jim Falls dam

Chippewa County (WQOW) – A school of sturgeon is swimming freely again thanks to the unselfish acts of an off-duty DNR warden and a family out on a hike.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, Brad and Tara Hagmann and their family were out on a weekend hike below the Jim Falls hydro dam near Chippewa Falls when they spotted seven large sturgeon trapped in a pool after the water was lowered.

DNR Warden Kevin Christorf of Chippewa Falls received the call that day on his day off and he jumped right into action.

Together, Hagmann and Christorf used a net to transport the seven sturgeon into the larger water.

The guess is the sturgeon were about 50 to 75 years old, and the largest about six-feet long.
